Whenever a significant awards ceremony draws close, there’s always an outcry for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would board games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories actually cover many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely that year
- Another creative title was excluded in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
- Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're small games, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
